Our Positive Impact: Casa com Arte's Sustainability

We genuinely believe that responsible tourism can — and should! — be a positive force for people and the planet. Sustainability is the foundation of our strategy and guides every step we take.

With roots in our family history, we meticulously care for every detail of this space. We've already embarked on a path of continuous improvement, where every choice and every detail contributes to a positive impact. Come live an experience with true purpose!

What we do to care for the environment

Biodiversity and Soil Management:

  • We've created a garden with well-adapted indigenous and Mediterranean species that don't need irrigation.
  • We've planted biodiverse meadows with 33 native species, actively promoting local flora and fauna and protecting the soil.

Conscious Water Management:

  • We use flow reducers on all taps and showers in the homes.
  • To protect underground aquifers, we don't use the property's well.
  • The pool has permanent water, so it doesn't need annual refilling, minimizing water consumption and waste.

Waste Reduction and Circular Economy:

  • We promote waste reduction and separation, with a recycling area for all guests.
  • We compost on-site.
  • To cut down on plastic water bottle consumption, we've installed a charcoal filter on the kitchen tap, raising awareness among our guests about this practice.
  • With a strong commitment to the circular economy, 80% of the house's furniture is reused, restored, or bought second-hand.

Energy Efficiency and Clean Energy:

  • We actively manage energy consumption, using efficient equipment (100% LED lighting and low-consumption appliances).
  • We've invested in 4 solar panels for our own clean energy production.
  • Most of the electricity consumed comes from certified renewable sources.

What we do for people:

Social Impact and Community Support:

  • We are members and actively collaborate with the local social association Asavida, which supports elderly people in the village and neighboring localities.
  • We sponsor and conduct art workshops with elderly members of the community, facilitated by resident artists in our project, promoting well-being and intergenerational inclusion.

Culture Promotion:

  • We are members of Acesso Cultura, a Portuguese association dedicated to promoting universal accessibility in cultural spaces and activities. This strategic partnership reinforces our commitment to ensuring that culture and inclusion are accessible to all, integrating these principles into all our initiatives.
  • We support culture in the region by hosting Contemporary Art artistic residency projects that interact with the local community, having welcomed three artists in the first year (2024).

Accessibility and Inclusion:

  • Our garden is accessible for people in wheelchairs, and we have removable ramps to improve accessibility inside the house.
  • We support inclusive employment in the region, contracting services performed by people with disabilities or over 55, including two employees with disabilities and two with senior talent.

Local Employment:

  • Maintenance services (house, pool, garden management) are 100% provided by local suppliers.

Promotion of Local Economy and Sustainable Purchasing:

  • We actively promote local businesses to our guests through our recommendations guide.
  • We use purchasing criteria with sustainability attributes for over 80% of products and over 50% of services acquired.

Our Dreams for the Near Future (Continuous Improvement):

  • Activate a small ecological garden with medicinal and aromatic plants in 2026.
  • Install 2 more solar panels in 2027, increasing our clean energy production capacity.
  • Produce wine from our vineyard (indigenous grape variety - Touriga Nacional) in 2028, in collaboration with a local producer. The vineyard was already planted in 2025.
  • Develop contemporary art activities for local primary schools and intergenerational workshops in 2026, expanding our educational and cultural impact.
  • Continue to improve accessibility in the house, specifically in one of the bathrooms, with the goal of completion in 2027.
  • Publish our first sustainability report in 2026, rigorously monitoring our environmental and social indicators.
  • Obtain recognized international sustainable tourism certifications, such as Green Key or EU ECO Label for Tourist Accommodation Services, by 2027, validating our commitment.

Our improvement is continuous. We believe that small actions, made with intention, can inspire big changes. Here, every guest is part of that transformation. By staying at Casa com Arte, you become part of a cycle of shared value and a truly conscious experience.

Resting here is caring.
